Placate means “to allay the anger of, especially by making concessions; appease.” ⁴⁰ Stroke someone’s ego Fig. to flatter and praise someone.⁴¹ It stroked their ego because they thought Jesus was referring to them as the older son (the good son).

In the second part of His answer, Jesus is saying that although He was critical of their behavior, He tried to impart his message in such a way that it wasn’t impolite.

God’s answer:

Peace hand sign and a nuclear bomb (nuke)

Make peace not war.

Meaning: Do not foster hatred: According to God, an anti-Christ (past or present) arises from an environment of strife, prejudice and hate. When people harbor deep-seated resentments, an anti-Christ can easily come to power (examples He gave: the cold war., Palestine vs. Israel, China, Hitler, Khomeini).

Love thy neighbor. Do not squabble. The devil feeds on your hatred for one another. This is applicable to all levels - personal, community and global relationships.
